Using the Functional Academic Assessment (FAA) Framework to

Identify Effective Academic Interventions for Struggling Students

Brief experimental analysis (BEA), a critical component of Keystone AEA’s Functional Academic Assessment (FAA) process, has emerged within the past several years as a valuable tool in aligning assessment to intervention. BEA allows practitioners to implement several academic interventions while assessing the immediate effect of instruction on a specific outcome. The interventions that produce the largest gains during the BEA process are subsequently implemented for an extended period. This presentation will describe how BEA can be utilized to select evidence-based reading fluency, decoding, and math computation interventions for struggling students. An overview of a four-year training implemented to train school personnel to utilize BEA and student outcome data will also be discussed.

Michelle Hinzman is a School Psychologist currently employed at Keystone Area Education Agency (AEA) in Dubuque, Iowa. As a member of Keystone’s Functional Academic Assessment (FAA) Team, Michelle has researched the application of brief experimental analysis (BEA); piloted BEA research in the subject areas of reading fluency, decoding, and math computation; developed and implemented a series of training courses for school personnel on the topic of functional assessment of reading; and presented nationally at the following annual conventions: the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI), the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), the Council for Exception Children (CEC), and the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). Michelle also is a member of Keystone’s Lit Team, Data Team, and provides consultative and assessment services currently to two urban elementary schools.

  3. Using Mobile Apps to Promote Student SuccessThis presentation will provide an overview of the use of mobile applications to support the success of P-12 students.
