More Than Math: Screening, Progress Monitoring, and Linking to Instruction

Keynote Speaker: Anne Foegen, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Iowa State University
Dr. Anne Foegen is Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Education in the School of Education at Iowa State University. She has been working in the field of special education for more than 25 years including direct service to students with disabilities, teacher education, research, and dissemination of her work through regional, state, and national conferences, as well as through publications in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Foegen conducts research and provides professional development related to progress monitoring assessments in mathematics. Her work has spanned the early grades through high school. She is currently directing two research projects funded by the Institute of Education Sciences in the US Department of Education. One of these projects is designing and evaluating online professional development modules for teachers that provide instruction and ongoing support for the implementation of algebra progress monitoring. The other project is expanding research on existing algebra progress monitoring measures to develop measures that tap conceptual understanding and to refine existing measures focused on procedural skills in algebra.
Considerations for Choosing Mathematics Progress Monitoring Measures From K Through 12
This session will review examples of progress monitoring measures from kindergarten through high school. Discussion will include considerations for choosing measures, including content, evidence of technical adequacy and logistical concerns. Pros and cons for selecting monitoring measures.
Afternoon Breakout Sessions (Please bring your own computer for these!):
- Bringing Math RTI to Life: Real Experiences within RTI Math Schools, Screening, Grouping, Designing, and Monitoring Math Interventions
- Current and Relevant Math Strategies and Interventions
- “Math Programs for Success in the Special Education Classroom”. Topics presented EasyCBM lite, Khan Academy, IXL Learning, and Edmodo: math journals.
