9:30-9:40 Break

9:40-11:00 Breakout Session 1

Room 108 Early Childhood Mental Health: Prevention is Key

Dr. Lisa Kelly-Vance, current NASP president and faculty member at University of Nebraska-Omaha, will discuss information about addressing mental health in young children. Participants will learn strategies they can implement with preschoolers and their families that prevent problems and reduce existing concerns. Case examples will be provided.

Room 109 No Need for Recovery Planning? Why You Should Reconsider

Dr. Melissa Reeves, Nationally Certified School Psychologist, former NASP president and current faculty member at Winthrop University, will discuss how trauma exposure can negatively impact school climate and the academic, social, and emotional development of youth. Most school crisis plans focus primarily on immediate safety efforts (e.g., lockdown, evacuation) with little or no attention given to crisis interventions and recovery. Statistics and specific examples will be shared that demonstrate how crisis preparedness, intervention, and recovery efforts are critical to mitigating traumatic impact and restoring learning in the aftermath of a crisis.

Room 114 Creating Resiliency in Schools, Educators, and Students

Debra Schwiesow, school psychologist at Green Hills AEA and Charlotte Mull-Young, former special education teacher, will present on the characteristics of resiliency and the importance of working proactively to develop healthy school systems, educators and students. The importance of building individual resiliency, also known as care for the caregivers or self-care, will be highlighted.  Specific examples and techniques will be provided.

11:00-11:10 Break
11:10-12:30 Breakout Session 2

Room 108 Multi-tiered System of Supports for Positive Well-Being

Dr. Dana Miller, school psychologist at Central Rivers AEA and Rusti Sparks, special education consultant at Central Rivers AEA,  will outline a proactive approach to addressing student needs through a Multi-Tiered System of Supports for Positive Well-Being.  Positive well-being is the outcome we strive to ensure all students achieve. The MTSS for Positive Well-Being framework proactively addresses students’ social, emotional, behavioral and mental health needs.  Participants will develop an understanding of MTSS for positive well-being, learn about the MTSS for Positive Well-Being framework developed by Central Rivers Area Education Agency, understand system considerations and discuss how MTSS for Positive Well-Being is implemented in a pilot school district.

Room 109 Conduct Disorder vs. Complex Trauma…or can it be both?

Dr. Melissa Reeves, Nationally Certified School Psychologist, former NASP president and current faculty member at Winthrop University, will compare and contrast behaviors consistent with conduct disorder and complex trauma to better understand the etiology of their challenging behaviors. Participants will better understand how complex trauma impacts behaviors, social-emotional development, academic achievement, and the ability to connect with others. The negative outcomes of ineffective interventions will be highlighted and interventions on how to more effectively reach these students and address the underlying complex trauma will be shared.

Room 114 Outcome Oriented & Legally Defensible Special Education Evaluations

Dr. Kathy Bertsch, Education Program Consultant at the Iowa Department of Education will discuss special education evaluation practice in Iowa. Iowa’s problem-solving approach is a key component to determine the interventions required to resolve concern as part of a special education evaluation.  However, intervention alone is unlikely to be comprehensive enough to meet IDEA requirements. Learn about recent case law and its impact on how teams evaluate whether a child has a disability and need for special education.
